Payment method is the most common reason a purchase fails, and the most common reason someone's privacy expectation turns out to be wrong. This guide compares the realistic options without recommending any single one.
Credit and debit cards
Still the most widely accepted. Success rates are highest for mainstream cards issued in the platform's primary billing region, and lowest for cards with international transaction blocks enabled by default.
- Best acceptance across platforms and countries
- Statement line is visible and may include a processor name
- International blocks and 3-D Secure prompts are common failure points
Prepaid cards and vouchers
Prepaid cards were historically the privacy default. Acceptance has narrowed and availability varies enormously by country. Where a platform accepts them they remain a strong option because the amount at risk is capped at the card balance.
Crypto
Accepted by a growing share of platforms. Advantages are the absence of a card descriptor and no bank-level conversion spread. Disadvantages are real: no chargeback path, price volatility between purchase and use, and additional KYC on many exchanges.
Local transfers and regional methods
Some platforms support regional rails. These often have the best conversion rates in their home market and the worst acceptance elsewhere. We record a method for a platform only where we can confirm it, so a missing method means unconfirmed rather than unsupported.
| Method | Acceptance | Statement visibility | Chargeback available |
|---|---|---|---|
| Credit / debit card | Broadest | Visible descriptor | Yes |
| Prepaid card | Narrower, varies by country | Limited | Rarely |
| Crypto | Growing | None on statement | No |
| Local transfer | Region dependent | Varies | Sometimes |
| PayPal | Select platforms only | Visible | Yes |
Payment failures: the usual causes
- Card issuer blocks the merchant category, often silently.
- Billing address mismatch on an international platform.
- 3-D Secure prompt timed out or was dismissed.
- Region mismatch between your payment method and your IP.
- Using a VPN that the processor flags as high risk.
If a payment fails twice, stop and check with your bank rather than retrying. Repeated declines can themselves trigger a fraud hold.
